A Life Lesson

Today I watched the movie Secondhand Lions for the second time. It's a good movie from 2003. It stars Michael Caine, Robert Duval, and a young Haley Joel Osment. The story was written by Tim McCanlies. During the movie, Robert Duval's character, Hub, was teaching a life lesson to Haley Osment's character, Walter. For young Walter, it was an important lesson. It was a lesson that most of us are usually not taught but, rather, come to realize at some point in our lifetime. True or not, it's an important lesson. Do you remember learning, or realizing, this lesson?

Walter: Those stories about Africa, about you ... they're true, aren't they?

Hub: Doesn't matter. If you want to believe in something, then believe in it. Just because something isn't true, that's no reason you can't believe in it.

Sometimes, the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in the most:

That people are basically good.

That honor, courage, and virtue mean everything.

That power and money, money and power mean nothing.

That good always triumphs over evil.

And I want you to remember this: that true love ... true love never dies.

Remember that, boy. Remember that.

Doesn't matter if it's true or not.

You see, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in.

Happy Thanksgiving !!

Thank you for this post !! I really needed it today of all days. I love, love, love this movie --and have seen it several times.

I found a lady to help me clean who (according to her) has 5 kids -- she did an awesome job for me and I found her so pleasant to be around. She wasn't judgmental that I had let my home get so cluttered. She worked non-stop and produced good results.

Later, I see a post from her on FB --basically saying she is in dire need for clothes, etc. as she has the 5 kids. When she was with me --she did not give off the vibe of desperation but somehow I felt it in her.

Now I want to help her with groceries and some clothes and toys that Alex has. But before I read your post the devil said --ah--this is a scam and she will skin you alive if you let her. Don't trust that anything she says is true -- I kept pushing back saying but 5 kids is 5 kids no matter how you say it --

Now without trepidation I will continue to move forward with my plans to help her. I chose to believe she's telling the truth.

I love this movie more than most -- it's so well written and even better played out.

I am blessed beyond measure so I will work to bless someone else.

Enjoy your holiday and keep the fantastic blogs coming -- I love reading them and learning and relearning good life lessons !!

Best, LL
