Dushka Zapata is one of the most prolific and popular writers working today. On question and answer site Quora her work has been viewed over 140 million times. She’s the author of eight best-selling books. The tips I quote (below the break) are from Dushka and I want to share them because I think in today's world it's more important than ever to remember that we're all individuals, that I don't have to believe what you believe, nor do you have to believe what I believe. Let's give each other room to be different without being enemies.
I practice telling myself the following:
I don’t need to be an expert. I don’t need to know: What would this look and sound like if I was looking at it with the mind of someone who knew nothing?
Just because I believe something doesn’t make it true.
Just because I don’t believe something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Just because you don’t believe in what I believe in doesn’t make you wrong.
Just because I wouldn’t do what you are doing doesn’t mean I will judge you or think less of you.
I can listen to different opinions about something and find them all both valid and valuable.
I can see and defend more than one side.
I don’t need to exercise control over the way others think: I don’t need to convert you, convince you, persuade you, change you or fix you.

Greetings
I've been in blog withdrawal --so glad to see you online.
I like your philosophy and completely agree with your ideas. It's very hard to accomplish this with friends and family and remain together. Especially regarding politics.
I also like the idea of staying away from the subjects that test those relationships. Oddly, I don't remember having so much difficulty with others when I was younger. Could it be we had our minds on so many other things?
Good to see you online -- hope all is going well and you're enjoying the fading heat.
Best, LL
