Snow began falling in my part of Virginia on January 5. The snowfall ended early on the 6th with an accumulation of about two inches -- a very light snowfall. But now it's the 9th and the ground is still mostly covered with snow, with patches of grass here and there. The snow lingers because the weather has been cold, with nighttime temperatures in the teens and daytime highs of only about 33 degrees Farenheit.
Date: January 5. Backyard (below).
Today is January 10. There is still a lot of snow on the ground.
The forecast calls for more snow tonight.

Brrr-- baby it's cold outside -- I've been out several times but now hopefully I can hunker down and stay warm.
Great pics --- in looking down one way in my neighborhood -- it doesn't look like it snowed --but looking out of my kitchen window -- it's all white -- no grass at all. I have a big black wagon parked in the yard for the deer, bird and squirrel food. I read on the internet how to put out water than will not freeze. It said to take a plastic water bottle and fill it half with water, alcohol and maybe some dawn detergent -- and it would float in the container and not freeze. Now to just find a container --
The birds love the seeds, apples, peanuts and corn - along with the things in my kitchen getting to ripe to eat.
I have several red headed woodpeckers, and even saw 2 robin yesterday --wonder where they have been hiding. On the back of the deck there is at least 2 inches of solid ice -- I'm not sure we are not in Alaska.
My furnace is working but was spotty the other day. But the gas free vent logs need serviced. My living room has always been cold --so now --oh goodness, it's really cold.
So I wanted some company but not a dog or cat. While with my daughter we had a few minutes and went into a pet store -- and came out with 2 parakeets, the cage and oh --you can imagine -- I put them in the living room --and guess what !!! They love You tube -- the parakeet channel --they sing along and have the best time. Yes, they are a little messy.
But now I can walk around in my house and talk to myself and no one knows I've gone crazy --because I'm talking to the birds. No names yet -- my grandson wants to name them Andrew and Monica from Touched by an Angel --but I told him I want one syllable so they can learn their names.
I cover them well at night -- the internet says they go to bed at 6-7 --so I think when I did the search I must have typed in "chickens".
Be well, stay safe and enjoy the fireplace.
Best, LL
